1881-O Morgan Dollar PCGS MS63
(VAM-3)
This original Morgan Silver Dollar has been authenticated and certified by PCGS and is encapsulated in their new blue-labeled holder. Both the obverse and the reverse are very well struck and exhibit blazing cartwheel luster. The obverse displays very strong curl-over-the-ear detail and the reverse displays very strong detail in the eagle's breast feather area (especially for a New Orleans minted Morgan Dollar). The portrait and devices exhibit a frosty appearance which surmount satiny fields. The obverse displays a puffy cheek and the typical light scuffy bag marks commensurate with this grade, while the reverse displays fewer bag marks than are typically encountered with this grade.
The PCGS population as of April 2002 for an 1881-O MS63 VAM-3 is 0. The VAM-3 attribution is not noted on the holder's label. The reason for this is that PCGS has only recently begun to attribute Morgan VAM Silver Dollars. We will provide you with the ANACS population census to illustrate the general rarity of this coin. As of March 2002, ANACS had only graded 4 1881-O VAM-3 Morgan Dollars in mint state (1 in MS-61 and 3 in MS-63). If this Morgan Dollar was to be submitted to ANACS and crossed over and, if ANACS concurred with the MS-63 grade that PCGS has given this coin, this coin would be tied for the highest graded mint state 1881-O VAM-3 Morgan Dollar certified by ANACS! If this coin was to be re-submitted to PCGS for attribution, it would be the only 1881-O VAM-3 Morgan Silver Dollar certified and attributed by PCGS! This is a rare and very well struck blazing 1881-O (VAM-3) Morgan Silver Dollar!
