1887 Morgan Dollar NGC MS 64 The obverse of this original Morgan Silver Dollar is well struck and exhibits a puffy cheek and a little weakness in the curls over the ear of Miss Liberty. The reverse strike is average, revealing some weakness in the eagle's breast feathers. The reverse exhibits two toning spots - 1 small spot on the eagle's right wing and a slightly larger spot in the field adjacent to the eagle's right wing and above the right wreath tips across from the E and D in UNITED. The reverse exhibits some die clash marks in the field between the left wreath and the MERIC in AMERICA. There are also die clash marks on the left side of the left wreath in the field between the eagle's left wing feathers and the middle of the wreath, as well as die clash marks in the field below the arrows and the lower mid-portion of the wreath. This specimen displays nice cartwheel luster and lightly frosted portraits and devices over satiny fields. Essentially a white coin with the slightest hint of very light golden toning on some of the devices. This coin exhibits the typical light bag marks commensurate with this grade. Of particular note on this specimen is a portion of the wreath on the reverse which has been struck through to the obverse and is visible at the nape of Miss Liberty's neck from approximately K3 to K4. This example also exhibits multiple continuous die cracks around much of the periphery passing over, under, and/or through the majority of the devices, inclusive of the date. Further, the reverse of this specimen, in addition to the die clash marks, exhibits multiple continuous die cracks around much of the periphery passing over, under, and/or through most of the devices, inclusive of both of the eagle's wing tips. These abnormalities qualify this specimen as a very rare triple error variety! The VAM-13, Struck Through, Continuous Die Cracks attributions are not noted on the holder's label. The abnormalities portrayed on both the obverse and the reverse qualify this specimen as a very rare triple error variety! NOTE: The VAM-13, Struck Through, Continuous Die Cracks attributions are not noted on the holder's label. The reason for this is that NGC does not currently attribute VAM Morgan Dollars that are not Top 100 or Hot 50 varieties. We will provide you with the ANACS population census to illustrate the general rarity of this coin. As of March 2002, ANACS had only graded 2 1887 VAM-13 Struck Through Morgan Dollars in mint state (1 in MS 63 and 1 in MS 64). If this coin was to be submitted to ANACS and crossed over and, if ANACS concurred with the MS 64 designation that NGC has given this coin, this coin would be tied for the highest graded 1887 VAM-13 Struck Through Morgan Dollar certified by ANACS! This is a very rare and stunning triple error variety PQ pop 2 Morgan Silver Dollar! This (VAM-13) variety is listed on page 282 of the fourth edition of the "Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace Dollars" by Leroy C. Van Allen & A. George Mallis:
"Obverse: First four stars on right and first two stars on left doubled at bottom with first two on right showing strong shifts."
