1885-O Morgan Dollar PCGS MS64 This original Morgan Silver Dollar has been authenticated and certified by PCGS and is encapsulated in their new blue-labeled holder. The obverse and reverse are well struck and exhibit satiny cartwheel luster. There is a rainbow crescent on the obverse from K10 through K2, displaying gorgeous tones of blue, russet, yellow, and peach. There is a smaller, less defined crescent on the reverse beginning at approximately K8 and terminating at approximately K11, displaying lighter shades of russet. The PCGS population as of April 2002 for an 1885-O VAM-5 is 0. The VAM-5 attribution is not noted on the holder's label. The reason for this is that PCGS has only recently begun to attribute Morgan VAM Silver Dollars. We will provide you with the ANACS population census to illustrate the general rarity of this coin. As of March 2002, ANACS had only graded 18 1885-O VAM-5 Morgan Dollars in mint state (3 in MS-62, 11 in MS-63, 2 in MS-64, and 2 in MS-65). If this Morgan Dollar was to be submitted to ANACS and crossed over and, if ANACS concurred with the MS-64 grade that PCGS has given this coin, this coin would be tied for the second highest graded mint state 1885-O VAM-5 Morgan Dollar certified by ANACS! If this coin was to be re-submitted to PCGS for attribution, it would be the only 1885-O VAM-5 Morgan Silver Dollar certified and attributed by PCGS! This (VAM-5) variety is listed on page 272 of the fourth edition of the "Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace Dollars" by Leroy C. Van Allen & A. George Mallis:
"Obverse: Date set high and slanted to make 5 higher than 1. Date set further left than normal."
